ATS Resume Test: Is Your Resume ATS Friendly? (2026)
To test if your resume is ATS friendly, copy all the text from your PDF or Word file, paste it into a plain text editor like Notepad or TextEdit, and check that every word appears in the right order with no odd symbols. Then check the file type, layout, headings, dates, and keywords against the job post with the 10 checks below.
You do not need a paid tool. The test uses a text editor, your resume file, and the job posting. It works the same way for a US resume or a CV.

How do you test if your resume is ATS friendly?
You test it by checking two things: whether software can read your file as clean, ordered text, and whether that text uses the same words as the job post. Have these ready:
- • The exact resume file you plan to upload (not the source file in a design app)
- • A plain text editor: Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on a Mac set to plain text
- • The job posting you are applying to
Run all 10 checks in order. Each one is pass or fail. Any fail is worth fixing before you apply, because each one is cheap to fix and you never know which system the employer uses.
What does an ATS actually do with your resume?
An applicant tracking system (ATS) stores applications, pulls the text of your resume into fields such as name, job titles, employers, and dates, and lets recruiters search, filter, and review candidates.
Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, and Taleo are common examples. They differ in features, but the core job is the same: keep applications organized for the hiring team. In most cases a person decides who moves forward. When a system does reject applications automatically, that is usually because the employer set up knockout questions in the form, such as work authorization or a required license.
Parsing still matters. Recruiters search the parsed text, so if your job title or skills come out garbled or missing, your resume may not show up in a search even when you are qualified. Some newer systems add AI matching or ranking, but each employer sets these up in its own way, and none publish a score you can test against.
Myth check
You may have read that ATS software rejects about 75% of resumes before a human sees them. The figure is widely repeated, but no public study backs it up. Treat it as a myth. The real risks are smaller and fixable: unreadable text, missing keywords, and knockout questions you did not answer carefully.
What are the 10 checks in the ATS resume test?
The 10 checks cover file type, plain-text order, characters, layout, headers and footers, headings, dates, keywords, contact links, and file name. For the full layout rules behind checks 3 to 6, see the ATS resume format guide.
1. File type and text test
Look at the file you plan to upload. If it is a PDF, open it and try to highlight a single line with your mouse.
Pass if the file is a .docx or a PDF exported from Word, Google Docs, or a similar editor, and you can select individual words.
Fix: If the whole page highlights as one block, or you cannot select anything, the PDF is an image. Export it again from a text document with Save as PDF or Download as .docx. Do not upload a scan, a photo, or a .pages file. If the job posting names a format, use that format.
2. Plain-text paste test
Select all the text in your resume (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A), copy it, and paste it into Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac (Format > Make Plain Text). For a Word file you can also use File > Save As > Plain Text.
Pass if all of your text appears, your name is near the top, and each job reads in order: title, employer, dates, then bullets.
Fix: If sections jump around, or text from two areas is mixed on one line, your layout is the cause. Go to the layout test below and move everything into one column.
3. Character test
Scan the pasted text for symbols that look wrong.
Pass if bullets, dashes, and letters look normal, with no empty boxes, question marks, or words stuck together.
Fix: Use standard round bullets or hyphens and a common font such as Arial, Calibri, Garamond, or Times New Roman. Remove icons, emoji, and decorative symbols. Replace skill bars or star ratings with plain words.
4. Layout test
Look at the page as a whole.
Pass if the resume is one column, read top to bottom, with no tables, text boxes, or sidebars holding content.
Fix: Move sidebar content such as skills, contact details, and certifications into normal sections in the main column. Delete the table or text box after you move its text out.
5. Header and footer test
Check what sits in the Word header or footer area, then check whether it showed up in your pasted text.
Pass if your name, email, phone, city and state, and LinkedIn URL sit in the main body as plain text.
Fix: Move contact details out of the header or footer and into the first lines of the page. Some parsers skip or misread those areas. Write each detail out in text, not as an icon on its own.
6. Section heading test
Write down the title of every section.
Pass if each heading uses a common name: Summary, Experience (or Work Experience), Education, Skills, Certifications, or Projects.
Fix: Rename creative headings like My Journey or What I Bring to standard ones. Software and recruiters both use these names to find where each part starts.
7. Date test
Read every date in the pasted text.
Pass if every role has a start and end date in one format, such as Jan 2022 – Mar 2024 or 01/2022 – 03/2024, with Present for your current job.
Fix: Use month and year for each role and keep one format throughout. Put the dates on the same line as the job title or the line right after it. Avoid seasons like Summer 2023 and avoid placing dates in a separate column.
8. Keyword test
Highlight the hard skills, tools, certifications, and job title in the posting. Then search your resume (Ctrl+F) for each one.
Pass if the main requirements you really have appear in your resume, spelled the way the posting spells them.
Fix: Add skills you actually have to your Skills section and to a bullet that shows them in use. Match the posting's wording, and write acronyms in full once, for example Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Never add a skill you do not have.
9. Contact and link test
Look at your contact line in the pasted text.
Pass if your email, phone number, and LinkedIn or portfolio URL are written out in full and spelled correctly.
Fix: Write links as text, such as linkedin.com/in/your-name, rather than a word or icon with a hidden link. A recruiter reading a printout or a parsed profile cannot click a hidden link.
10. File name test
Look at the name of the file you will upload.
Pass if the file name has your name and the document type, such as Jordan-Lee-Resume.pdf.
Fix: Rename files like resume_final_v3 (2).pdf. You can add the role if it helps you keep versions apart, such as Jordan-Lee-Resume-Data-Analyst.pdf. Recruiters see the file name, and a clear one is easier to find.
For check 8, a list of common terms helps you spot what you missed: see resume keywords by industry. To work the posting's requirements into your bullets without stuffing, follow the steps in how to tailor a resume to a job description.
Extra check when you apply
Many application portals offer to fill in your work history from the resume you upload. Watch what lands in each box. If job titles, employers, or dates end up in the wrong fields, the parser had trouble with your file. Correct the fields by hand in the form, then fix the resume before your next application.
What does a resume that fails the plain-text test look like?
A resume fails when the pasted text comes out mixed up, for example when a two-column template weaves the sidebar into the job history. Here is the same fictional resume pasted into Notepad twice.
Example: fails (two-column template)
SKILLS Jordan Lee SQL Python EXPERIENCE Data Analyst Tableau ■ ■ ■ □ Brightline Health 2022 – CONTACT Present Built weekly claims Columbus reports for the operations EDUCATION team in SQL and B.S. Statistics Tableau
Problems: skills and job history share lines, the skill-rating squares show up as symbols, the end date is split from the start date, and the contact details are missing because they sat in the page header.
Example: passes (single column)
Jordan Lee Columbus, OH | jordan.lee@example.com | (555) 010-0142 | linkedin.com/in/jordanlee SUMMARY Data analyst who builds reporting in SQL and Tableau for healthcare operations teams. EXPERIENCE Data Analyst, Brightline Health, Columbus, OH Jan 2022 – Present - Built weekly claims reports in SQL and Tableau for the operations team. - Automated a monthly Excel report with Python. EDUCATION B.S. Statistics, Ohio State University, 2021 SKILLS SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel
Why it passes: one reading order, standard headings, dates in one format next to the job, contact details in the body, and skills written as plain words.
What goes on an ATS resume checklist?
An ATS resume checklist has the same 10 pass/fail checks in short form. Save it and run it on every new version of your resume.

Do you need a paid ATS checker or an ATS score?
No. The self-test above covers what matters for readability, and there is no universal ATS score that every employer uses.
Online checkers can save time, but each one scores resumes with its own rules, so the same file can get very different numbers. None of them can see how a specific employer has set up its system. If you want to know how these tools work and when they help, read what an ATS resume checker is.
A more useful question is whether you fit the job. That is a different measure from readability, as explained in job fit score vs ATS score. ElevateAI's 0–100 job fit score, for example, measures how well your experience matches a job. It is not an ATS pass rate.
Does the same ATS test work for a CV?
Yes. An ATS parses a CV the same way it parses a resume, so all 10 checks apply without changes.
Only the conventions differ. A UK or EU CV is often two pages, and it may use dates like 03/2024 instead of Mar 2024. Either is fine for the date test as long as you use one format throughout.
What should you do after your resume passes?
Passing means software can read your resume. It does not mean the resume is convincing. Next, make the content match each job: lead with the experience the posting asks for and show results in your bullets. The guide on how to write a resume that beats ATS covers the writing side.
If you would rather not rebuild the layout by hand, ElevateAI writes a resume for each job from your real experience in a simple single-column layout, and exports text-based PDF and Word (DOCX) files on paid plans.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my resume is ATS friendly?
Copy all the text from your resume, paste it into a plain text editor, and check that every word appears in the right order with no odd symbols. Then confirm you used a DOCX or text-based PDF, one column, standard headings, consistent dates, and the job post's key skills that you really have.
Is PDF or Word better for an ATS?
If the job posting asks for a format, use that one. Otherwise, a text-based PDF or a .docx file works in most systems. If an application portal shows garbled fields after you upload a PDF, try the .docx version instead.
Does an ATS automatically reject resumes?
Mostly no. An ATS stores and organizes applications so recruiters can search and review them. Automatic rejections are usually set up by the employer through knockout questions in the application form, such as work authorization, not through your resume layout.
Is there a free ATS resume test?
Yes. The 10-check test in this guide is free and needs only a text editor, your resume file, and the job posting. Free online checkers also exist, but each one scores resumes in its own way.
Can an ATS read tables and columns?
Some parsers handle them and others mix up the reading order. You usually cannot know which system an employer uses, so a single-column layout with no tables is the safest choice. The plain-text paste test shows you whether your layout scrambles.
What is a good ATS score?
There is no universal ATS score that every employer uses. Scores from online checkers are each tool's own estimate. Focus on passing the readability checks and on matching the real requirements of the job.
Do ATS systems read headers and footers?
Some do and some skip or misread them. To be safe, put your name and contact details in the main body of the page, not in the header or footer area.
Is an ATS CV test different from an ATS resume test?
No. An ATS reads a CV the same way it reads a resume, so the same 10 checks apply. Only the conventions differ, such as length and date format, and those do not change how the file is parsed.
